ABC is reporting that NOAA is down about 2,000 employees since January “as a result of the first round of the Trump administration's cuts.” California Congressman Jared Huffman, who chairs one of the relevant House subcommittees, said, "There is no way to absorb cuts of this magnitude without cutting into these core missions. This is not about efficiency and it's certainly not about waste, fraud and abuse. This is taking programs that people depend on to save lives and emasculating them." Cuts that sound like a good idea to Elon Musk and Donald Trump have real impacts on the rest of us. That is only just beginning to dawn on people, who I’m sure you’re hearing, like I am, saying, “But I didn’t vote for this.” Trump 2.0, as I’ve written previously, isn’t a pick-your-own-adventure experience. You go to the carnival, you get all of the rides. We were fortunate last night. Everyone in our house (chickens included) is okay, we just have a little cleanup to do. But so many people weren’t that lucky. They lost houses and lives. They will need support from FEMA and other federal services. If DOGE continues its romp through essential federal work that we, as taxpayers, fund and rely on, it’s only going to get worse.

Because Mar-a-Lago, in Palm Beach, straddles the width of the barrier island, police boats with machine guns mounted on the bows patrol the Intracoastal while a Coast Guard vessel is stationed off the beach in the Atlantic. Additional costs include law enforcement and explosive-sniffing dogs.

Veterans don’t need healthcare, and old people can die, as long as Donny can golf and Elon can do ketamine.

Once these are destroyed, it will take years to restore them, if they ever can be.* Rather than resigning ourselves to this fate, I’d suggest "we" should jiu-jitsu the GOP by removing the agencies from under the federal government and establishing them in the trust of a coalition of states. This will not be cheap, but as the GOP reduces the size of government, they also reduce its power — and the requirements for financial support from states. Democrat-run states already, on average, contribute more to the federal government than they receive in return. In the future, this imbalance seems only set to increase (e.g. support from FEMA to east coast states such as Florida in the aftermath of hurricanes). This would be a bold strategy, and doubtless not without risk ("states' rights" only ever seem to apply to red states); however, it's not clear what other actions might actually save the agencies, information, and knowledge that we will collectively depend on in the future (especially in the domains of health and climate protection). Joyce Vance comments on how much people through the center of the US relied on NOAA forecasts and warning with the massive storm system that has just caused so much damage and loss of life. Yet about 2,000 NOAA have been cut since January and there's no way the program will continue to function well with massive cuts in personnel.
