Well, that's definitely a lesson to keep in mind if you are e-biking in remote areas....

"According to the group, a female biker faced major complications after her e-bike battery died in a remote area. This resulted in the woman being stranded in the desert for 30 hours, pushing her bike 20 miles before she ended up being located and rescued deep in the park."

This is not to say this is the type of rack or installation we would have recommended. We were not consulted, of course.

This is a "pilot project" that was installed after we lobbied, had meetings, called politicians, etc. It is in reaction to that work.

Done in a way that was meant to minimize and bury the work we did, and to take credit for it it it was successful.

But it is more accessible than most racks at UC Davis or even in #DavisCA #CycleParkingAudit #BikeTooter #UCAccessNow

Basket of old AA bike lights for $10. Now checking them out. Will need straps, but I wonder if I can get away with using old rubber tubes somehow. Will load them with AA's and attempt to give them away to cyclists riding by on the dark with no lights. #BikeTooter

Cycling parts mini review

Bought a CatEye Viz450 rear bicycle light to replace the failed Cygolite Hotshot Pro 200C. Although I liked the product, this seemed a suitable moment to change ecosystem, and so to have a look at products not from the US.

I am pretty sure the LEDs in the CatEye are not as bright as in the Cygolite, but the plastic lens are excellent and make the unit far more noticeable on the road. The less wattage and overall better design gives a runtime six times that of the Cygolite, which suits this commuting cyclist.

When buying a light this expensive (AUD90) you buy mounts for all your other bikes. No point having a great light on your roadie only to be unnoticed on your shopping bike. The Cateye additional mounts were a moderate AUD10 each (the Cygolite mounts have inflated to about AUD40ea, clearly they want to sell a second light if possible).

Mechanical parts break down eventually. @pete asks:

Q8. I think I jinxed things the other week with my 'do you repair?' question and somehow snapped a rear axle last weekend: What's the most recent component that you broke or wore out, and have you managed to get it fixed?
