Stuck at the „Loading kernel…“ message when you expect #freebsd to continue booting after the Beastie screen? Hit 3 while you still can to escape to the loader prompt. Type „set boot_verbose=-v“, confirm with Enter, then „boot“. Solved the problem for me. To make that permanent add boot_verbose=-v to loader.conf.

Sometimes I think, maybe I should use TrueNAS, and then I remembered that their C•Suite decided to give the 🖕🏻 to FreeBSD... the very same operating system and community of developers and engineers who enabled their company to exist from the start, to scale to the level which brought them success and growth and accolades from the OSS and enterprise storage communities alike.

So no, I don't use TrueNAS. Whatever many reasons they and their indolent fanboys push for moving to Linux, and I have heard them all, it's irrelevant. They didn't just bite the hand that feeds, they went straight over to the clown-show makeup meme table and slathered it on; trying so hard to convince everyone including themselves that this betrayal was the Good and Ethical thing to do.

Luckily there are alternatives, and those will get my time, engineering efforts, and fiscal support. One thing to remember: alienated users do not recommend those formerly loved products to their employers, they do not "spread the love" via organic marketing, and perhaps sometimes they dissuade when they would formerly embrace.

On #FreeBSD 14.2 with OpenVPN 2.6.13, I'm using

data-ciphers AES-256-GCM:AES-128-GCM:AES-256-CBC:ChaCha20-Poly1305
data-ciphers-fallback AES-128-GCM

However, this appears in the logs:

Note: cipher 'AES-256-CBC' in --data-ciphers is not supported by ovpn-dco, disabling data channel offload

What ciphers and fallback are you using to avoid that disability?

EuroBSDCon 2025 in Zagreb, Croatia 🇭🇷
September 25-28, 2025

I was listening to the BSD Now podcast and they were talking a lot about BSD conventions. It sounded like fun. I'd like to go to one. They said they are very welcoming to newcomers.

With my social phobia and agoraphobia, I think a BSD convention might be more manageable than, say, something like DEFCON or SCaLE. My estimate is that the latter would contain an order of magnitude more people than a BSD convention, and thus take place at larger, more daunting locations.

The folks on the BSD Now podcast mentioned that to maximize enjoyment of a BSD (or any) convention, one must observe the 6-2-1 rule, which consists of at least 6 hours of sleep, 2 meals, and 1 shower. This is reasonable. To help with my anxiety, I'd make it the 6-2-2-1 rule, which is at least 6 hours of sleep, 2 meals, 2 clonazepams (take one an hour before, and one during the convention), and 1 shower.

The closest upcoming BSD convention is BSDCan in June 2025, in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The BSDCan website has information about accommodations and traveling to Canada. bsdcan.org/2025/

I looked up flights out of O'Hare to Ottawa on June 10th, and there are 20 available on the Air Canada website. It is a 2 hour flight. ~$252 for economy class seat and a shittier flying experience. ~$500 for a non-refundable business class seat, which is a more tolerable flying experience. ~$600 for a refundable business class one. I'm leaning toward the latter.

Do you know @dexter? If not, congrats, this your lucky day!

He's kind of the ultimate hype man and force multiplier, and an all round excellent human. I know him through the #OpenZFS and #FreeBSD worlds, though he seems to be everywhere! Every day, he's working hard to get the right people for the job in front of each other in the same room, and creating space (time, money) for them to get shit done.

Follow him, and when he asks for help, listen. You'll be helping to lift a lot of boats.

@amoroso beyond all expectations, I installed #Interlisp from source on #FreeBSD today.

I was doing a quick test of how much pain it would be to create a port package for #freebsd

Maiko built on the first try.
I got the runtime via git.
I got the prebuilt loadups.

After unpacking, I ran the (obsolete) startup script and…it just worked. Medley running under Wayland.

Was it. Supposed. To work?
