@cstross

Uhh, no, thank you very much.

You might see _your neighbours rolling over to become slaves.

You might like drawing parallelograms around German racist thug history, but Canada is Vietnam not Austria.

Only Russia is bigger.
Russia's economy is smaller than 🇨🇦

Canada has loyal allies, Russia has North Korea.

Canada already beat one US invasion. Do not think politeness and decency masks weakness.

"French nuclear attack sub docks in Nova Scotia"

I'm more motivated to finish PM Carney's book, "Value(s): Building a better world for all", and came across this section:

❝An advantage of the subjective approach to value is that it is neutral. Everything that is priced can be compared by means of a common, widely available standard, the market price. But from the perspective of welfare, it creates several issues.

First, whereas economic infrastructure and economic capital are usually priced, social infrastructure, social capital and natural capital generally are not. This can lead to underinvestment in what matters for wellbeing. In standard GDP accounting, government contributes no value added beyond public sector salaries. Measurement of (unpriced) outputs would better reflect both living standards and economic per-formance. What captures performance during the crisis? A healthcare worker's salary or their heroic efforts at saving lives?❞

So we know he at least understands the problem. #CanPoli #CdnPoli

My dearest UK followers and fediversians.

Can someone explain to me the persistent reluctance from the UK of saying anything at all in defence of Canada?

I think Canadians appreciate the King’s subtle gestures, but as strong and independent as we are, we would also appreciate some more forceful pushback to Trump from our centuries old friends and allies, and particularly our former colonial master with and for whom we have spilled much blood.

Or should we internalize this not so subtle refusal and respectfully but truly strike our own path?

Carney "axed the tax" and also eliminated the Labour Minister.

As far as I'm concerned, the Conservatives won the disinformation war.

What do the Conservatives have left to complain and fundraise on?

We were in LifeLabs this morning and asked staff about their ongoing strikes.

They said they thought the last American company that owned them were bad enough but the current company is just as bad. Care about profit not staff.

The moral of this story is to NEVER vote for a Canadian politician who wants to bring in US style health care because these companies don't give a toss about patients or staff, only profit.

Learned something new today! In that hour and a half or so between the time that Prime Minister Trudeau resigned and Prime Minister Carney was sworn in, Canada's leader was.... drumroll: 🥁

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Richard Wagner!
Also known as Boring Santa Claus.

OK... that last part is not true, he is definitely not Santa Claus, and just cuz he might be boring, doesn't mean he's not smart and respectful. 😜

Oh, and there was also a talisman delivered to Minister of Innovation, Science and Industry, Anita Anand. It's the Seal of Canada.

Then they sang OH CANADA and left to play political hockey!🇨🇦🏒

Nice to see a black Canadian, Arielle Kayabaga sworn in as Minister Democratic Institutions and Government House Leader.

She is 34, Refugee of civil war in Burundi

She will not have much to do unfortunately, as the expectation is the House will not sit before the Election but this is a promotion for her from Parliamentary Secretary to Small Business.

Interesting to see Chrystia Freeland moved to Transport and Internal Trade. The talking heads say it is a demotion, and sure, it's not Foreign Affairs, Finance, or let alone Deputy PM, but in these times when Canada might have to completely reorganize its economy from north/south to east/west and negotiating with provinces to take down provincial barriers, Transportation and Infrastructure is going to be extremely important to get right.

Carney smiles as he and the representative of King Charles in Canada, Governor General Mary Simon, stand for a photo.

It's pretty remarkable that he has achieved this position without *ever* being elected in any public office. That is new and historic. He is also the first PM to be born in one of Canada's Territories (Fort Smith, Northwest Territories). He grew up in Edmonton.

Heard on the radio that it is expected Carney will go to Europe to meet leaders there *before* calling an election. So perhaps no election call next week, but it is still expected to come before Parliament returns on the 28th.
