From @ScienceAlert: Baleen whales undertake some of the longest yearly migrations, with humpbacks travelling up to 8,300 km (about 5,150 miles) from Antarctica to warmer wintering grounds. With them, the whales shuttle resources from nutrient-rich polar regions to the less resourced warmer regions of the oceans. Amazingly enough, a huge amount of this nutrient distribution comes from whale urine, which disperses nitrogen and other elements through the ocean when nature inevitably calls.

so the research community is fighting back against trump

and the courts, for now, are on their side.

but i feel like there are four years of this vehement anti-science agenda ahead, the trupm admin started trying to dismantle pretty much all of our scientific endeavors immediately, and they installed leadership at various agencies that will move to fulfill their goals.
so while the pushback is awesome, it feels like more needs to happen.

But on 5 March a federal judge in Massachusetts defused the bomb before it could explode. In response to a lawsuit brought by 22 states and a coalition of research organizations, U.S. District Court Judge Angel Kelley issued an injunction that prevents NIH from implementing the rule change, which would lower the rate to a flat 15%—far below what NIH has previously negotiated with many universities. The government now must decide whether it is going to appeal the decision. Kate Heffernan, a life sciences attorney with Epstein Becker Green, thinks the government’s arguments in trying to avoid the injunction suggest it has little chance of winning an appeal. But President Donald Trump’s administration still has a few options if it wants to try to shrink spending on indirect costs, she adds, including changing the rules governing how federal health agencies craft new policies.

A first look at the #underground visit to the Sanford Underground Research Facility. We arrived early in the morning to gear up and then catch a 07:30 cage (elevator) to the 4850ft level. We then rode a tram on a rail line from the Yates Shaft and the “Davis Campus” of the lab over to the “Ross Campus”, where the DUNE (Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment) will be constructed.
